McKinney, Texas is a city located in the U.S State of Texas and it’s considered to be one of the best places to live by many people. The city has a populace of around 166 thousand residents and is part of Collin County. It is found approximately 33 miles away from Dallas and 11 miles from Mesquite. The city is also fairly close to Richardson and Plano.
The history of McKinney dates back to the initial planning stages by Alexander J. Collin in 1845 when he proposed a townsite for his new community with the name of “Collin’s Valley.” This would soon change when Samuel M. Elliot, an early settler from Kentucky, suggested the name of “McKinney” in honor of Collin’s son, Robert M. McKinney. The land was sold to the Houston and Texas Central Railroad who advertised their new town as a railroad junction on December 16th, 1872.
The first train arrived on January 22nd, 1873 with a great celebration that included a barbecue and a street dance in the middle of the tracks. The population was around 100 residents and it would soon grow to roughly 1,000 by 1890 when McKinney was incorporated as a town. A post office opened up in 1877 and electricity was introduced in 1895 which made McKinney one of the first cities in Texas that had such luxuries.
The city of McKinney would later become a town of 33 thousand residents by the year 1960. The population count reached 50 thousand in the year 1980 and it got to be 100 thousand around 1990.
The economy of McKinney is driven by several different factors which make up a conglomerate effect. There are many employment opportunities within the city, due to its relatively small size and the many companies that call this place home. Some of these include Volvo Construction Equipment, Aeon Engineering, Double AE Recycling, Alcon Laboratories Inc., The North Dallas Bankruptcy Center, JG Ellington Air Conditioning Company, Main Event Entertainment Website, SouthWest Aluminum Products, and several others.
Some smaller business-related ventures are located in McKinney, including several retail stores and restaurants. There are over 9,000 companies in all which have an active interest in this community.
The City of McKinney has several different facilities to help support the public safety efforts of its residents. Some of these include Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), Emergency Medical Services (EMS), First Response Team, Fire Department, and Police Department.
In addition to the Community Resources that are available, several services focus on providing support for people who may need additional help. Some of these include McKinney Public Library, Neighborhood Centers Inc., YMCA, and many others.
Several educational institutions service the McKinney Community. Some of the most notable are: Aikin Elementary, Embery Park Elementary, Kohl-Welles Elementary, Morningside Elementary, Northridge Middle School, Oglesby Junior High School, McKinney High School, Life School Of The Metroplex – Plano Campus, and New Technology High School. Several parochial schools include St. Peter the Apostle Catholic School and Our Lady of Grace Catholic School.
